Fried Green Tomatoes (Crispy Southern Style)

Ingredients

4 large green (unripe) tomatoes

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

½ cup all-purpose flour

2 large eggs

½ cup buttermilk

¾ cup cornmeal

¼ cup breadcrumbs

½ teaspoon paprika

½ teaspoon garlic powder

Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

Slice tomatoes into ¼-inch thick slices. Lay on paper towels and sprinkle with salt. Let sit 10–15 minutes, then pat dry.

Set up three bowls:

Bowl 1: Flour seasoned with pepper.

Bowl 2: Eggs beaten with buttermilk.

Bowl 3: Cornmeal, breadcrumbs, paprika, and garlic powder mixed together.

Dip each tomato slice in flour, then egg mixture, then coat well in cornmeal mixture. Press gently to help coating stick.

Heat about ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat until hot (around 350°F / 175°C).

Fry tomatoes in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.

Remove and drain on paper towels.

  • Serve warm.
