🫘🥓 THE ULTIMATE SOUTHERN BAKED BEANS 🥓🫘

No BBQ or family reunion is complete without a big pot of these! We’re talking about thick, bubbly beans loaded with crispy bacon, brown sugar, and a hint of tang. 😋✨

These aren’t those thin, watery beans from a can—these are slow-baked until the sauce is sticky, dark, and full of soul!

🛒 INGREDIENTS

The Base: 2 cans (28 oz each) Plain Pork and Beans (or Great Northern beans if starting from scratch)

The Meat: 6 slices Thick-cut Bacon, chopped

The “Trinity” of Flavor:

1 Medium Yellow Onion, diced

1/2 Green Bell Pepper, diced

2 cloves Garlic, minced

The Sticky-Sweet Sauce:

1/2 cup Brown Sugar (packed)

1/2 cup BBQ Sauce (your favorite smoky brand!)

1/4 cup Molasses (for that deep, dark color)

2 tbsp Yellow Mustard

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp Smoked Paprika & 1/2 tsp Black Pepper

👩‍🍳 INSTRUCTIONS

1️⃣ The Sizzle: Preheat your oven to 325°F. In a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven, fry the chopped bacon until it’s crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon but keep that delicious grease in the pan! 🥓

2️⃣ The Sauté: Add the onions and bell peppers to the bacon grease. Sauté for 5 minutes until soft. Add the garlic for the last minute.

3️⃣ The Mix: Stir in the beans (drain about half of the liquid from the cans first for a thicker result), brown sugar, BBQ sauce, molasses, mustard, Worcestershire, and spices.

4️⃣ The Fold: Stir those crispy bacon bits back in.

5️⃣ The Bake: If using a skillet, you can bake it right in there! Otherwise, transfer to a baking dish. Bake uncovered for 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes.

6️⃣ The Finish: You’ll know they’re done when the sauce has thickened and the top has a beautiful, dark caramelized “crust.”

💡 PRO TIPS:

The “Lattice” Look: For an extra impressive presentation, lay a few whole strips of raw bacon across the top before putting it in the oven. They’ll cook right into the beans! 🥓✨

Slow Cooker Option: If you’re short on oven space, you can do these in the Crockpot on low for 4–6 hours, but you won’t get that same caramelized top.

Add a Kick: If you like some heat, finely dice a jalapeño and sauté it along with the onions. 🌶️
